E60: Why You're Invisible on Google (and the Truth About SEO)
Overview
You're great at what you do and you've been doing it for years, so you assume you should be at the top of Google. Google doesn't work that way. It doesn't rank you for being the best or the oldest, it ranks the business that most clearly proves it belongs there. In this episode Sean breaks down what SEO actually is (and what it is not), why your competition is beating you even when you do better work, and the five things a real, holistic SEO strategy should be doing for your business every single month.

(00:04) So you're really good at what you do, and you've been doing it for years. So you should be at the top of Google, right? Unfortunately, you're wrong. Google doesn't rank you for thinking you're the best or being the oldest. So today I'm going to show you what SEO actually is, why your competition is beating you, and what real SEO should be doing for your business every single month.
(00:56) Welcome to the Marketing Domination Podcast. I'm Sean Garner, founder of Sean Garner Consulting. We're a digital marketing agency that helps local service business owners get found, get more leads, and dominate their market. I'm an owner myself too. My wife and I own several other service-based businesses, like a medical spa and a functional medicine practice. So everything we share on this podcast comes from running these same playbooks day in and day out, not just theory. Each week I break down marketing into plain English so you know exactly what needs to be done in your business to grow without having to become the marketer yourself.
(01:46) You're invisible when it comes to SEO because most local businesses don't understand what SEO really is. They think because they're great at their craft and they've been around a long time, they'll automatically rank number one. That's not how Google works. Google has an algorithm, and it's always trying to show the most relevant result to the person searching. Google makes money by people using the platform, so it needs them to have a good experience. That algorithm isn't trying to hurt you or punish you. It's trying to show the searcher the most relevant businesses and websites for what they typed in.
(02:36) So what SEO is, is optimizing everything so you can tell Google, ChatGPT, and these crawlers exactly who you are, how long you've been in business, and why you're awesome and deserve to rank number one. That's what SEO is.
(03:02) I also want you to know what SEO is NOT. It's not tricking Google or gaming the system. And it's not paying an agency that has some magic button in the back they push to showcase your website. It's being clear and improving why you should rank where you want to rank. You're telling Google and these crawlers exactly who you serve, what services you provide, where you serve them, what you do, why you get good results, and you're backing it all up.
(03:36) When we do SEO at our agency, we use two terms I want you to understand. One is holistic SEO. A lot of people are paying for SEO services but only getting a small niche of the whole picture of what it takes to rank. The other is the term SEO itself. Traditionally it stood for search engine optimization. We've changed it, because people are searching everywhere now: Google, LLMs like ChatGPT, even social platforms. So for us it's not search engine optimization, it's search everywhere optimization. Holistic SEO means making sure we're doing everything we need to show up everywhere your customers are looking for you.
(04:15) If someone is truly doing SEO for you, here's what should be happening month after month. You can't just do part of it and beat your competition. You have to do all of it. The first thing is technical SEO. That means checking and updating the things you can't see just by looking at a website. It's making sure the back end has a strong foundation so Google trusts it. Imagine walking up to a sketchy building with broken windows and doors; you don't want to go inside. Google treats your website the same way. It can look pretty, but if the code is broken on the back end, Google won't trust it because it looks sketchy.
(04:48) The second thing is user experience and how the page actually converts. Google looks at what happens when it shows your site to a searcher. Say someone searches “Dallas med spa,” clicks your practice, and then immediately goes back to Google looking for other med spas. Google can tell that, and reads it as a poor experience, so it pushes you down. We always want to look at conversion factors that keep people on your page longer and get them to take action, which shows Google you're a relevant result for what was typed in.
(06:00) Third, if you're doing this holistic strategy each month, they need to be adding new content to your website every single month: blog articles, subservice pages, location pages you want to target. Part of SEO is proving to Google that you're knowledgeable on the subject, that you serve these locations, and that you have all your services listed. So you should always be adding content and optimizing it, coming back to that user experience, every month.
(06:40) Next, they need to be getting backlinks and digital PR for you, so your brand gets mentioned and picked up by AI tools and Google's AI overviews. A backlink is nothing more than a digital referral. It's getting other websites and digital PR articles to link to your site from theirs. Google says, this person trusts them, and we already know this site, so maybe we should trust them too. That's one of the big ranking factors Google uses to decide if your business is trustworthy.
(07:30) The last piece each month is your Google Business Profile. It needs to be fully optimized: built out, good description, and more importantly, you're getting Google reviews consistently. Here's the thing. If we say we're the best but our competition has 500 reviews and we have 100, who really looks like the best? Maybe you've been in business longer and served more customers, but because your competition is doing a better job of consistently getting reviews, with automations like the ones we build for clients, they're beating you. It's not that they're better at the job. They're just doing a better job of being clear and proving why they should rank higher.
(09:05) One client we saw this with was a plumbing company, Half Moon Plumbing. They were long established and doing great work in a suburb, but they wanted to reach a bigger market next door. They'd spent three years with a large agency that specialized in the trades. I don't love that, because when an agency specializes in one niche to scale, it often gets templatized, and that's exactly what we saw. When they came to us, we built a unique holistic SEO strategy that took them from 16th in that major city to the top position in just six months. Three years with the other agency got them to 16th. A few changes and a real holistic strategy got them to the top spot in six months. The difference was real, and all we did was create a custom holistic SEO strategy.
(10:00) Here's what to remember. SEO is not about tricking or hacking Google. It's about being clear and proving it: optimizing who you are, who you want to serve, who you want to reach, and what you do. Your competition shows up higher because they're clearer at proving it. The best don't show up on top, the clearest do.
(10:37) So if you're currently paying an agency for SEO, ask them this: What did you do for my business across these areas, technical, content, backlinks, digital PR, Google Business Profile, and reviews? If they can't answer that, you have gaps in your SEO, and that's most likely why your competition is beating you. You're invisible because you assumed experience ranks you, and it doesn't.
(11:20) Final recap. Number one, you're invisible because you assume experience ranks you and it doesn't. You have to tell Google. Everything that happens in the real world needs to be put out there digitally, and that's SEO. Number two, real SEO is being clear and proving it. It has to be done holistically, with all the parts, not just a few here and there, every single month, consistently. Your competition is beating you because they're being clearer than you, not because they're actually better.
