Master Your Marketing and Get Noticed Via Google & AI

Most marketing does not fail because you picked the wrong tactic. It fails because the pieces are built in the wrong order. That was the heart of Sean Garner’s conversation with Dr. Robert Frieman on Episode 140 of the For The Love of Chiropractic podcast, and it is the same system we use at Sean Garner Consulting to help local service businesses get found and win more leads.

Watch the full episode here: Master Your Marketing (Episode 140). Here is what Sean covered.

Social media is a tool, not a strategy

Most owners treat posting as their whole marketing plan. Sean splits social media into two jobs. The first is billboard content: the posts that simply remind people you exist, like a sign you pass on the highway. The second is a sales tool, where you are actively engaging and messaging prospects every day.

The mistake is putting billboard effort into social media and expecting it to sell like a sales tool. If you want it to sell, treat it like a sales asset. If you just want the reminder effect, that is fine, but you still have to be consistent. Sean’s minimum is three posts a week, because your profile is your digital storefront. When a prospect finds an account that looks abandoned, they trust it about as much as a restaurant with dirty windows and no posted hours.

The good part is that most of this can run on autopilot. Share your Google reviews as posts, show behind-the-scenes moments in your stories, and prove you are a real, active business run by real people.

Fix the leaky bucket before you spend another dollar

When Sean gets asked about the most common marketing mistake, his answer is always the leaky bucket. Most established businesses are not doing the wrong things. They are doing the right things in the wrong order.

The bucket is your sales funnel: the full journey that turns a stranger into a customer for life. That means your branding, a clear message (Sean is a Certified StoryBrand Guide, so this comes first), a website built to collect leads and make money, lead generators like a checklist or quiz, and a follow-up sequence plugged into a CRM.

When the bucket is not built, everything you pour into Google Ads, social, and SEO leaks straight back out. You get frustrated that marketing “does not work,” when the real problem is that there was no foundation to hold the results. Without a framework to measure against, you cannot even see where the leaks are.

Stop doing SEO. Start doing Search Everywhere Optimization.

Sean does not call it search engine optimization anymore. He calls it search everywhere optimization, because the goal is to show up everywhere your customers look, from Google to social to AI. He teaches it as a four-pillar approach, using a house you are trying to sell as the picture.

Pillar 1: Technical SEO is the foundation

This is the behind-the-scenes work you cannot see. A site can look beautiful and still sit on a cracked foundation, and if it does, Google and AI crawlers will not trust it.

Pillar 2: User experience is the floor plan

Google watches how people behave on your site. If visitors bounce back to the search results in seconds, that tells the platform your page did not deliver. Clear layout, strong calls to action, and engaging content keep people there.

Pillar 3: Content is the square footage

Add pages for every service and treatment, and just as importantly, pages for the symptoms and problems people actually search for. Publish articles that prove you know your subject. A bigger, more authoritative site is worth more.

Pillar 4: Authority is the neighborhood

This pillar is the hardest and the slowest to move. You build it with backlinks from sites Google already trusts, plus brand mentions and digital PR. A smaller house in a great neighborhood beats a mansion in a bad one. Get all four pillars working together and your digital house is worth as much as possible, which means it ranks as high as possible.

The five places you can show up on Google

Sean breaks Google visibility into five spots. Two you pay for, three you earn.

  • Paid: Google Local Service Ads (LSA) and Google Pay-Per-Click (PPC).

  • Earned: the organic search results, the Google Map Pack, and AI overviews.

The Map Pack matters most for local businesses. It rewards proximity, review count, and a fully optimized Google Business Profile. Here is the part most owners miss: review velocity can beat review quantity. A newer business earning 20 to 30 reviews a month can outrank a legacy competitor who has hundreds of reviews but has gone quiet, because Google reads that momentum as popularity. Automate your review requests instead of leaving them to a busy front desk, and you win on velocity long before you catch up on volume.

How to get recommended by AI

AI platforms work on a similar idea to Google but pull from different places. Google reads the links pointing to your site. AI reads brand mentions, meaning your actual business name written across the web. A link with generic anchor text does not tell AI who you are. Your name, spelled out on directories, articles, and other sites, does.

That is exactly why Sean does guest appearances like this one: to get his brand mentioned across the web. AI also leans on reviews from third-party platforms, not just Google. Most small businesses are asleep on Trustpilot, Yelp, and Facebook reviews. Hit even ten reviews on those and you often have more than everyone else in your local market.

How to spot a marketing agency that will waste your money

Before you hire anyone, Sean says to press on three things.

  • Deliverables. Make them explain, in plain terms, exactly what you get and how it grows your business. If you pay a monthly SEO retainer but no new content or backlinks show up each month, you are paying for reports, not results.

  • Communication. Ask who you actually work with and how fast they respond. Your business happens in real time, so waiting a week for an email answer does not cut it.

  • Meeting cadence. You should meet at least quarterly, and ideally monthly, to review strategy and the numbers. If they cannot explain the data in a way you understand, ask more questions.

Ready to Build Your Marketing System?

Marketing success for local service businesses isn't about finding the perfect tactic, but about building a robust system. It starts with fixing the leaky bucket first to ensure your foundation is solid, followed by treating social media as a strategic sales asset rather than just a billboard. By adopting a "Search Everywhere" approach, you ensure your business is both found and chosen across all modern platforms. Ultimately, the goal is to build a digital presence that earns trust. Remember, knowledge without execution won't grow your business.
